The seasoned CEO and his wise words.

In my early days as a consultant, I sat down with an elderly business leader, the majority shareholder of the company he presided over. When I asked him what his responsibilities were, he answered the following:

I hire people for my management team who are professionals in their field of work. They should be better than me in what they do.

My responsibility is to orchestrate the team and support them to do an above-average job! There is no place for “prima donna’s”.

This way, we create the best place to work with the best people at work.

It’s now thirty years later, and his words are still very applicable in these challenging times.

Tip of the Day: Gossip can Break or Make your Business

gossip_shutterstock_101127469.jpg

Gossip is a habit which can seriously hurt people and your business. Chances are that people who gossip are out to hurt people they see as a threat to themselves. The most dangerous effect about gossip is that it can destroy someone’s reputation rapidly without them being aware that it’s happening. When they find out, it might be too late.

How to avoid gossip?

Next time someone tries to share a gossip with you, ask them if they would be willing to share it with the person they are talking about. Most probably they will refrain from gossiping with you in the future.

Inform your co-workers on a regular basis about business, your market developments, events and people.

Promote positive feedback: when people want to talk about others, it should be constructive, positive, emphatic and needs to carry a learning message.

As a leader, make clear that you are not open to gossip and you will act to stem it. Your team will love you for this!
